Karen Summy, APRN-BC
After graduating from high school in Rush City, Minnesota, Karen entered the United States Army Reserves and Completed Boot Camp at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and her Advanced Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas as an Army Medic. Karen subsequently obtained her 91Charlie, (LVN) while serving in the Army. After her separation from the military, she received her Associates Degree in Nursing at Minneapolis Community and Technical College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Karen spent 7 years as a staff nurse in a surgical intensive care unit at the Baptist Health System in San Antonio, Texas. Karen is married and focused on her family and has two wonderful children.
Karen continued on with her education at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (UTHSCSA) earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree and became the cardiac educator with the Baptist Health System. In 2001, Karen left the hospital system to pursue work in private practice and joined Alamo City Cardiovascular Surgeons (ACCS) with Dr. James Knight and completed her Masters of Science in Nursing Degree at UTHSCSA. Karen’s primary focus is cardiovascular nursing. In 2011, her practice was acquired by HCA where she continued to provide patient care for 5 area hospital systems. Today, Karen and Dr. Knight are presently working with J. Marvin Smith III, M.D. at CardioThoracic Surgical Associates. She practices as an advanced practice nurse specializing in cardiovascular care.
Karen belongs to a number of professional organizations locally including San Antonio Advanced Practice Nursing Association (SANAP) and San Antonio Vascular Society. She is a board certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Clinical Nurse Specialist).
