J. Marvin Smith III, M.D.

Dr. Smith is a native of San Antonio and a 5th generation Texan.  He is a 1972 graduate of the Tulane University School of Medicine.  His  postgraduate training in surgery included one year at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas and four years at the Health Science Center in San Antonio.  He completed a two year residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery under the directorship of Dr. Denton A. Cooley at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston.  During his tenure in Houston, he also received extensive experience with chest disease at the M.D. Anderson Hospital.  After completion of his residency, Dr. Smith entered active duty service in the United States Air Force, serving in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the USAF Wilford Hall Medical Center.  Reaching the status of Vice Chairman and ultimately Acting Chairman of the Department, Dr. Smith was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his service there.  CardioThoracic Surgical Associates was established in 1982 by him and has continued in uninterrupted fashion.

Dr. Smith is certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.  He is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology, while holding the title of Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  In response to national defense needs, he has been actively involved in the education of  surgical residents of the Department of Surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center since 2005.

Dr. Smith has served as President of the Bexar County Medical Society, the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society, and has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Medical Foundation, a Board on which he still serves.  In addition to numerous leadership positions within the hospital staff, around town, and the Texas Medical Association, Dr. Smith has served on numerous committees of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.  This included appointment to the Standards and Ethics Committee of the Society.

Dr. Smith’s civic involvement includes an 8 year tenure on the Board of Managers of the University Hospital District.  He has also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Texas Ranger Association Foundation and continues in service on that board.  He is married to Jill Jones Smith and has three children; Cuatro, Alexa and Jacqueline.
